My Top Three Gels for Ultimate Curl Definition

The weather has heated up. The humidity is not playing with us. And guess what, y’all? It is only going to get hotter and more humid. For those of us with naturally curly hair, using something that is going to keep our flyaways and frizz at a minimum. Of course, over here at All Things Allyson, we love volume and know that there is absolutely nothing wrong with frizzy hair! However, sometimes, this southern humidity has a way of getting the best of our natural tresses, and us curly-coily ladies may need something that is going to ensure that our hair stays in place no matter what!

The absolute best type of product to use for curl definition is a gel. Gels are products made to hold a hairstyle in place. They are not meant for moisture and may oftentimes leave a hard cast on your hair. The reason being is because it is locking your style in place. If you do not like the hard gel cast, it can easily be broken by using a hair oil or hair serum and scrunching your curls to break the gel cast. However, typically after a day or two, the gel cast goes away on its own.

While all gels are meant to hold your curls, coils, and kinks in place, not all gels are created equally. Some gels have that “Ramen noodle” effect that often comes with a gel cast. Some gels are more light weight and offer a softer hold. The beauty in gels is that there is one out there for everyone! Without further ado, here are three of my favorite gels to use to beat this southern humidity!

  1. Eco Styler Gel

  • If you want your tresses to stand a chance in this humidity, you must have Eco Styler in your arsenal! Eco styler is a staple for wash and gos and sleek buns! It may give you a hard cast, depending on what cream you use it with, but your curls and coils will be very well defined for days! My favorite is olive oil (green). Have you tried Eco Styler gel before? If so, leave your favorite one below!

  1. Camille Rose Naturals Curl Maker

  • This gel may be a bit pricey, but it is worth every cent! The Curl Maker is a light-weight, slippery gel that offers amazing hold without too much of a cast. However, please be aware that a little bit of this product goes a long way! A plus is that this product (like Camille Rose’s other products) smells absolutely amazing!

  1. Uncle Funky’s Daughter Curly Magic

  • I don’t know who Uncle Funky’s daughter is, but she did her thing with this gel! Like the Curl Maker, this gel is also slippery. The hold is impeccable! Be prepared to be told that your hair smells good with this gel. One of my co-workers at my previous job told me that my hair smelled like eucalyptus when I used this as my styler for my wash and go.

There are more gels that I could add to this list, but these three are the ones that have stood out the most to me recently. Let me know if you like blogs like this and what other hair suggestions you’d like to see!
